"Cops, Kids set to enjoy park picnic
BY MALINDA RUST STAFF WRITER MRUST@LAWTON-CONSTITUTION.COM
Lawton police are preparing for officers and citizens to collide for a day of fun at the annual Cops and Kids Picnic.
LPD Sgt. Brad Delozier said the department is calling all cars (and fire trucks) to help provide the public with a bit of insight into emergency responders’ jobs to go along with great fun to begin at 10 a.m. Sept. 14.
Lawton police and fire, along with the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, have already signed on to provide demonstrations, police car rides, bounce houses, obstacle courses and prizes to go along with hot dogs and refreshments at Elmer Thomas Park. Jim Glover Chevrolet has agreed to double the number of children’s bicycles to be given away at this year’s picnic.
The picnic is funded every year by money raised at the Cops and Kids Poker Run, which was June 22, as well as donations. The purpose, as Delozier explained, is to help foster positive relationships between officers and citizens, primarily youth, in order to promote civic engagement and responsibility.
We deliver COP programs to kids all the time, and when we ask them what police officers do, they always say ‘arrest people’ or ‘catch bad guys,’” Delozier said. “It’s not common to have even one child say ‘They help people.’”
By having what may arguably be the best show and-tell day ever, Lawton police hope to create a lasting image with young people that the men and women in blue are assets and allies.
Children will receive free T-shirts while supplies last, and plenty more. Law enforcement agencies who wish to set up a booth or participate in the event, or anyone seeking more information, can contact LPD Sgt. Brad Delozier 351-6726."
Regularly scheduled meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month at the Great Plains Technology Center in Building 900 at 6:30pm.
